Pets with Kidney Disease: Supplements & Medications

Dedicated to BaBa, a Shih Tzu with renal failure

In addition to modifying the diet, pets with kidney disease may be helped with the following:

    • phosphorus-binders (aluminum hydroxide—Alternagel and Amphogel; aluminum carbonate)
    • calcium control (calcitriol)
    • red blood cell boosters (erythropoietin) to prevent anemia
    • blood pressure stabilizers (ACE inhibitors enalapril and amlodipine)
    • stomach protectants (sucralfate, cimetidine, ranitidine, famotidine) to prevent ulcers
    • potassium supplement (oral potassium gluconate, IV potassium chloride)
    • pH stabilizers (bicarbonate) to prevent metabolic acidosis
    • appetite stimulants (oxazepam)
    • Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil or ground flax seeds.
