Pets with Kidney Disease: Supplements & Medications

In addition to modifying the diet, pets with kidney disease may be helped with the following:
- phosphorus-binders (aluminum hydroxide—Alternagel and Amphogel; aluminum carbonate)
- calcium control (calcitriol)
- red blood cell boosters (erythropoietin) to prevent anemia
- blood pressure stabilizers (ACE inhibitors enalapril and amlodipine)
- stomach protectants (sucralfate, cimetidine, ranitidine, famotidine) to prevent ulcers
- potassium supplement (oral potassium gluconate, IV potassium chloride)
- pH stabilizers (bicarbonate) to prevent metabolic acidosis
- appetite stimulants (oxazepam)
- Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil or ground flax seeds.
