Young females faster at timed tests
Research published in May-June 2006 issue of the journal Intelligence shows that although girls and boys have similar overall intelligence, girls perform better on timed tests. We might expect similar results when testing young male and female dogs for timed agility, herding, or working abilities. If this is so, we should wait until dogs are mature to predict which will excel at timed events. It’s also wise to have extra patience with boys who are training their dogs. As boys mature, this research predicts their abilities to perform with their dogs at timed agility and rally events will improve.
While nature and genetics determine a large part of a working dog’s performance, nutrition and environment are also important. We can support physical and mental development with Omega three fatty acids. Dog food companies have begun incorporating fatty acids into their formulas because research proves that Omega 3s contribute to behavior and trainability. While all pets need to learn, we have exceptional expectations of working dogs, and it is best to consistently offer them small amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids to support maximum brain and nervous system development. It is not helpful, in fact it is a waste, to over supplement with Omega 3 fatty acids. It is also a waste to give them immediately before events. Brain cells are built over time, so that supplements should be consistent, and should be begun early. I recommend Omega 3 fatty acids for all pregnant pets to encourage normal fetal brain development.
