Allergies In Babies Raised With Pets
The American Thoracic Society (ATS) focuses on treating human allergies and respiratory diseases. The ATS is interested in whether children with pets have more eczema and allergy symptoms. Studies in the past have shown that children with dogs and cats have fewer allergies. However, a new study of 500 children found being raised with cats increased childhood eczema. Researchers were not sure whether the increased eczema would continue into adulthood or would subside.
Many factors predispose children to developing allergies and eczema, one of which is early exposure to allergenic substances called antigens. Antigens are usually proteins, and it’s the proteins from the pet’s skin and urine that cause allergies. Male unaltered cats cause more allergic symptoms than do female cats (queens) or neutered males. In both cats and dogs, dirty, unwashed pets are more antigenic than are clean, well brushed pets. Pets receiving Omega 3 fatty acids that have healthy skin and coats may be the least likely to cause allergies in humans.
Among the best Omega 3 fatty acids are ground flax seed and fish oils. For aged and very ill pets, use fish oil.
