Pets with Kidney Disease: Recipe for a Home-cooked Diet
Dedicated to BaBa, a Shih Tzu with renal failure
The following is a home-cooked diet developed for a 40-lb dog with kidney disease by Dr. Barrak Pressler
cooked white rice or rice baby cereal flavored with meat broth 237 grams
cooked hamburger or stew beef with the fat 78 grams
boiled egg 1
white bread 50 grams
vegetable oil 3 grams
calcium carbonate from Tums or a similar antacid 1.5 grams
iodized salt 0.5 grams
vitamin-mineral tablet 1
These pets also benefit from receiving Omega 3 fatty acids. Use the fish oil which has been tested and confirmed pure by independent laboratories. If your pets don’t like fish, use fresh, ground flax seed.
