Ear Cropping and the Veterinarian's Oath
Some topics guarantee an argument; ear cropping is one of those topics. In the past the following breeds have had their ears cropped because people thought it made them look fiercer or more alert:
- Affenpinscher
- American Staffordshire Terrier (Pit Bull Dog)
- Boston Terrier
- Briard
- Boxer
- Brussels Griffon
- Doberman Pinscher
- Giant Schnauzer
- Great Dane
- Manchester Terrier
- Miniature Pinscher
- Miniature Schnauzer
- Standard Schnauzer
As humans become increasingly aware of canine capacity for pain and self-awareness, they find ear cropping a procedure that disfigures and causes pain. Thus, European nations and some states have begun legislating against this practice. From a health standpoint, ear cropping is uncalled for, so it is difficult to understand why those who have taken the Veterinarian’s Oath perform the surgery. Does it make sense for veterinarians to argue that if they don’t do it, someone else less skilled will?
This is the Veterinarian’s Oath:
Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine, I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health, the relief of animal suffering, the conservation of livestock resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge.
I will practice my profession conscientiously, with dignity, and in keeping with the principles of veterinary medical ethics.
I accept as a lifelong obligation the continual improvement of my professional knowledge and competence.
If you believe ear cropping is unethical, motivate your legislature to make it illegal and discuss it with your veterinarian. This is one case where laws are needed to ensure ethical behavior.
