Top Endocrine Publications of 2011: The Feline Thyroid Gland

In my third compilation of the canine and feline endocrine publications of 2010, I’m moving on to disorders of the feline thyroid gland.

Listed below are 13 papers published in 2011 that deal with a variety of thyroid gland topics of issues of clinical importance in cats.

These range from from a review of congenital hypothyroidism (1) to an overview of the causes, diagnosis and treatment of feline hypertension (10,12); from studies of the prevalence of hypocobalaminaemia in cats (3) to the metabolic complications associated with thyroidectomy (4); from the investigations of efficacy and safety of iopanoic acid (5) or a novel lipophilic formulation of methimazole (9) for treatment of hyperthyroidism to the evaluation of predictors for the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism (13); and from the use of homeopathic treatment for hyperthyroidism (2) to ectopic lingual thyroid tissue cats (11).
