Cancer Increased In Golden Retrievers With Sterilization

There was an increase in cancer in Golden Retrievers when spayed or neutered, regardless of whether they were spayed and neutered early (before one year of age) or late (after one year of age).

A UC Davis study of over 700 Golden Retrievers compared dogs that were spayed and neutered with those left intact. The study found the likelihood of cancer (lymphosarcoma) tripled in males that had been neutered  before a year of age compared with intact males. The study also found significant increase in hemangiosarcoma and Mast Cell Tumors in females that were spayed after one year of age.
The study was published in the Feb 13, 2013 edition of PLOS ONE, a peer-reviewed scientific journal: Neutering Dogs: Effects on Joint Disorders and Cancers in Golden Retrievers.
