Diatomaceous Earth for Fleas and the Lung Problem, Silicosis
Diatomaceous Earth and Fleas in Dogs and Cats
My biggest concern diatomaceous earth is that folks liberally dust the powder over their dogs and cats and the pets can inhale the particulate matter. Inhaled diatomaceous earth can cause silicosis, also known as farmer’s lung. The particle size of diatomaceous earth can be as small as 3 micrometers, and anything smaller than 5-8 micrometers can be inhaled into the lungs. From 80-90% of dried diatomaceous earth is silica. In addition, there is some heavy metal contamination of diatomaceous earth.
