Chicken Jerky Continues Killing Dogs

Don’t feed chicken jerky treats to your dog or cat. Over 5,600 dogs and a few cats have become ill eating chicken jerky treats from China. Of these, 1000 dogs have died. Dogs that did not die experienced a variety of health problems from including seizures, vomiting and gut problems, kidney or liver disease, hives and urinary problems. Three humans have also become ill, two children and one adult.

Jerky has caused problems throughout the world, including the US, Canada, and Australia, and veterinarians in these countries are warning families not to feed chicken jerky.

Among contaminants found in jerky from China are:

  • DEET N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, an insecticide so powerful it that it melts plastic.
  • the drug amantadine
  • illegal antibiotics
Some large retailers, including Petco and PetSmart, are going to stop selling jerky treats from China—but only after getting rid of current stocks, so beware.

Rather than feeding jerky treats, offer your dog dried sweet potatoes, beans, bananas, peas, carrot shavings, apple, etc. Avoid raisins and grapes.
