Marijuana for Dogs and Cats, Who Might Benefit
Research has shown marijuana benefits humans with several medical conditions:
· Anxiety and mood changes associated with chemotherapy
· Chronic pain
· Nausea, especially nausea from chemotherapy
We might expect pets with these problems to also benefit from marijuana. In addition, we might expect pets with weight loss and anorexia due to chronic disease to benefit.
Other dog and cat medical conditions that I’d like to see marijuana considered for include
· Anxiety associated with kennelling, especially of abandoned pets in humane societies and animal shelters.
· Anxiety associated with genetic tendency to OCD, which is increasingly common in dogs bred for agility and sporting events.
· Anorexia and vomiting associated with chronic kidney disease. That’s about 1/3 of cats and 1/3 of dogs in North America.
· Hyperthermia associated with Labrador Retriever and Border Collie genetic disease caused by inherited mitochondrial abnormalities.
· Headache pain in Cavalier King Charles Spaniel due to syringomyelia or occipital hypoplasia.
· Pain associated with cancer, especially osteosarcoma or osteochondroma of Rottweilers and other large breed dogs.
· Cachexia associated with cancer, especially hemangiosarcoma of Golden Retrievers and German Shepherd Dogs.
· Cachexia associated with heart disease, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy of Maine Coon cat and dilated cardiomyopathy of the Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, St Bernard, Old English Sheepdog, Doberman Pinscher, and Boxer.
· Cachexia due to heart valve disease in the English Bulldog, Poodle, Maltese Terrier, Shih Tzu, Cocker Spaniel, German Shepherd, and Golden Retriever,
I’d like to clarify that I personally don’t use marijuana for medical purposes or for recreation, but I am not offended by the idea that others might.
In a later blog, I’ll discuss the different forms of marijuana, and the diseases for which it has not been found helpful.
