BEIRUT – Tehran has reportedly adopted a new policy to remove the “Death to America” slogan from the public sphere, with one Iranian outlet saying the slogan has been scrubbed from the walls of the former US embassy in the capital.

Iranian website FardaNews.com published pictures of people removing graffiti of the infamous motto—popularized by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini during the Iranian revolution—from the former US embassy compound, which protesters seized in November 1979.

In reaction, the student organization of the Basij paramilitary forces issued a statement criticizing the scrubbing of the slogan from the former embassy building.

Al-Arabiya cited a report published by Fars News Agency carrying the statement, in which the Basij promised the slogan would “continue to decorate the walls of the US embassy,” in an indication that members of the organization would replace the removed graffiti.

The statement said that despite the historic nuclear agreement inked between Iran and the US earlier this year the Basij would “not allow normalization with America and the forces of arrogance” and called on media outlets not to publish stories about the removal of anti-western slogans.

Last week, reports began to emerge of Iran backing off from the “Death to America” chant ubiquitous in the country’s rallies amid efforts for diplomatic rapprochement between Washington and Tehran following the July 14 inking of a nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 powers.

Basij commander Colonel Barat Zadeh announced that mosques in Iran had begun removing the “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” slogans, and that they were no longer being chanted during daily prayers, Al-Quds Al-Arabi said on August 26, citing a report from pro-Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps website Basij News.

According to the daily, Zadeh expressed his regret over the abandoning of the slogans, saying that “the spirit of combating arrogance and self-sacrifice emanates from the mosques,” which he described as the Basij’s chief recruiting ground.
