Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.), a founding member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, acknowledged Sunday that current Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is the favorite to replace John Boehner as speaker.
"I think it's fair to say that Kevin has the inside track for the position," Mulvaney said on Fox News Sunday.
His remarks came as the Freedom Caucus issued a statement Sunday saying it hasn't decided whom it will back for speaker or other leadership posts.
Mulvaney was questioned by Chris Wallace in a joint interview with Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), a Boehner loyalist and currently a deputy whip.
Cole said "I don’t think there’s much doubt Kevin will be the next speaker of the House, and he should be."
Asked about the timing of leadership elections, Cole said: "Quicker’s better. Why do you want to have a long, drawn-out family drama? … I don’t think there’s a lot to be gained by dragging it out."
Mulvaney said it remains to be seen whether McCarthy would be any better than Boehner from conservatives' perspective.
"The important question is will things change? Will they change for the better or will we simply replace Mr. Boehner with somebody else who will do the same thing?"
"I do think Kevin is a much more ground-up than top-down type of leader," Mulvaney added.
