Pets with heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and depression benefit from Omega 3 Fatty Acids

We know from over 50 research studies that Omega 3 fatty acids benefit people with heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and depression. Pets with these medical problems also benefit from Omega 3 fatty acids.

Unfortunately, the diets of many pets are also deficient in fatty acids. Fatty acids are an expensive component to add to pet foods. Many companies use less expensive farmed fish, vegetable oils and chicken fats which are devoid of Omega 3 fatty acids. The best pet food and pet supplement manufacturers use wild caught fish and flaxseed because these provide high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids.

It is also difficult for pets to obtain an effective level of Omega 3s because many companies that advertise adding fatty acids to foods do so in token amounts. In addition, fatty acids are lost from foods and supplements as they sit in storage unless the air is removed and the product vacuum packed. An alternative to vacuum packing is to flush the product with a gas, such as nitrogen, to replace room air.

If you want you pet to benefit from Omega 3 fatty acids

    • Read the label To ensure that adequate amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids are in the product.
    • Buy products sealed in barrier packaging that prevents air and light transmission.
    • Buy products from reputable companies.

In addition, only buy products that you can reseal. More of the fatty acids, and essential vitamins and nutrients remain in the food once it is opened if the bag can be resealed.

One more consideration when purchasing products with fatty acids is that the product does not contain heavy metals, pesticides and other contaminants. Many contaminants chemically attach to oils and fats so that meat, fish, and plants used to yield fatty acids can contribute unwanted chemicals and heavy metals to your pet.

Nutrition is the single most important factor in your pet’s health, and providing your pet with Omega 3 fatty acids helps ensure less arthritis, less cardiac disease, less depression and moodiness, and less diabetes.
