Toxicity and Detoxification Part 3: sources of unrecognized toxins & cell death
Sources of unrecognized toxins
Although we don’t realize it, many pet foods and treats contain materials that cannot be processed into proteins, fats or carbohydrates and thus become toxic. Dyes, chemical preservatives, herbicide residues, molds such as aflatoxin, can all become toxic. Foods and treats labeled natural are not necessarily any better because they can contain meats exposed to growth hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides. Natural foods and treats commonly contain grains that are not of the quality that can be sold for human use. These second-rate grains are often damaged and more likely to contain molds. Thus, you can help your pet avoid toxins, by feeding only organic or holistic foods and treats from reputable companies.
Death cell by cell
The concept that all death is caused by cell death is difficult for some to understand. What it means is that a pet’s organs function until enough of the cells of that organ die. Then the organ fails. Organ failure sets up a domino effect and after one dies, so does another. The rate of death can be gradual or it can be rapid. Thus, an infection like ehrlichia can cause enough kidney cells to die of glomerulonephritis that the kidneys fail. As the kidneys fail, the heart, brain, liver, and other organs also begin to die. A pet with a weak heart will die much faster than a pet with a healthy heart, but they both die. A pet eating aflatoxin contaminated food suffers liver cell damage. Eventually the liver fails, the other organs fail and the pet dies.
Death and illness comes to pets cell by cell. Thus, the health of each cell is essential for life. That is why holistic veterinarians advise that pets eat only the most wholesome foods, organic when possible, and take as few medications as possible. Holistic veterinarians also recommend that pets take supplements that support the liver and promote its ability to detoxify.
